What is CO2 extraction
and what are its advantages?
Extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide is a technology that uses the fourth state of matter - the supercritical state. The substance changes into it under the influence of appropriate temperature and pressure parameters, becoming a liquid with gas properties. This allows for the selective extraction of various biologically active compounds with high chemical and microbiological purity.
Supercritical carbon dioxide is an excellent solvent, it dissolves even the lightest fractions of essential oils, it is inert and safe for the environment. Due to the low polarity of carbon dioxide, it is ideal for the extraction of compounds such as fatty acids, carotenoids, lipids and resins. Conducting the process at relatively low temperatures not exceeding 50 degrees Celsius protects the extracted compounds against thermal decomposition.
